Mission definition
We have different types of satellites for different missions (such as Reconnaissance satellites).
Orbit types
Orbit types: LEO (Low earth orbit 180-2000km), Medium earth orbit (MEO 2000-35,786km), Geosynchronous orbit (GEO 35,786km).
At GEO, the satellites will move at the exact same period of time as the earth moves. Always position at the same relative position to Earth. (I’m on top of Spain 4everrr lmao).
LEO Satellites
Used for various purposes that are very important to humanity and planet earth, such as:
- Communication: Allow telecommunications and global internet services. Enable high speed data transmission, internet connectivity to remote and underserved regions, and mobile communication.
- Earth observation: collect data for weather, environmental monitoring, agriculture, disaster management, urban planning. They carry image and remote sensing instruments.
- Navigation and Positioning: Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS, utilize constellations of LEO satellites to provide precise positioning, navigation, and timing information to users worldwide.
- Scientific research: such as studying the climate on earth, monitoring space weather, investigating celestial phenomena, and exploring the space environment.
- Space Debris Tracking: Some LEO satellites are dedicated to tracking and monitoring space debris to avoid collisions with other satellites and protect critical space assets.
- Earth-to-Space Communications: LEO satellites facilitate communication with other spacecraft, including crewed missions, space stations, and interplanetary probes.
- Space Exploration: LEO serves as a starting point for launching spacecraft to higher orbits, the Moon, or other planets. It enables missions to assemble components in space, perform spacewalks, and test technologies before deep-space missions.
- Remote Sensing and Imaging: LEO satellites capture high-resolution images for mapping, surveillance, and reconnaissance purposes, benefiting industries like defense and security.
Constellation
Satellite constellations are groups of two or more satellites working together to achieve specific purposes. These satellites are strategically placed in various orbits to collectively provide global or regional coverage and services. They have several key features:
